We have probably heard the famous phrase "Jumping out of your comfort zone" with a lot of memes and motivational quotes on the internet about it, such as: jumping out of comfort zone will lead us to “where the magic happens” and “where the success is achieved”. It absolutely requires courage to do so, but we have to do that if we want to expand our lives, explore new horizons, and discover new opportunities. All of us have done it at different levels in our lives.
In academic life, "Jumping out of your comfort zone" can be: changing the research topic, moving to a new working place, changing the type of the job, and any other change that may be accompanied by new challenges and uncertainties. It is exciting to jump out of our comfort zone because we will learn a lot and can train and strengthen ourselves. Plus, something new has come to life. The problem is that we have been encouraged to jump out of the comfort zone, but there is no enough guidance (at least to my knowledge) on what is waiting for "AFTER jumping out of your comfort zone".Just leaving the comfort zone itself is impressive, but we need to be prepared for after that in order to avoid undesired situations and make the most advantage of the new achievements.
If "out of the comfort zone" means an unstable job, unpredicted environment, or unknown surroundings, we need to be ready for that, and accept the situation and try to make the best out of it, and accept the fact that those uncertainties are all stuck to the new life. In my opinion, "jumping out of your comfort zone" is more like walking on an edge rather than just jumping to a higher level. Of course, thinking about the mentioned issues does not mean that we should be afraid of making any change to our life, but being ready for any unpredicted condition that may happen AFTER jumping out of the comfort zone is very important and requires obtaining new qualifications in our lives including:
- Problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- Stress management skills
- Effective communication skills
- Keeping work-life balance
- Improving physical and mental health
